Step 3. Cell Shading Tutorial by SarahScala Step 3. Cell Shading Tutorial by SarahScala

My version of Photoshop is CS5.5 not the newest but it works a treat, this tutorial isn't aimed at true beginners of Photoshop, for that there is YouTube! This is for people that are dabbling or have the hang of things mostly.

o.O I didn't think it would be this big!! SERIOUSLY almost 10mb, sorry if it takes long to load my lovelies I wanted to make it as understandable as possible.

This is the third part!!
Shading.

PART 1 - Lineart with the grid system -
PART 2 - Colouring -
PART 3 - Your looking at it! (or not if it's still loading ^^;)

Thanks for the tutorial, it helped me a lot! Mine doesn't have quite as much detail as yours, but I love how it looks. I think I'll continue using this in the future! :D

I'm doing an art trade with a friend but the horse they want me to do is a light bay with really pale face and socks. What would be the best settings for it?

Hmmmm, Not sure really, it could fit in many different settings but perhaps a dusky setting sun with oranges and deep blues for shadows on the horse :3

I like how your tutorials are easy to understand, you don't skip steps and have notes regarding any doubts or giving extra info. Very well organized too. I've never used the gradient tool to shade, I might try it now that I understand it a little better.

Yeah, that's it :) Of course you need to download the software that takes about 5 minutes, but that's it. I just get confused with the looking at the screen and drawing without looking at my hand xD

When you did the first layer of shading, did you (for lack of a better word) draw in the space to be filled, or something else? I don't really understand what you did there.

Ah no problem, after I selected all the areas I wanted to I changed tools to the 'gradient tool' it's on the same button as the 'fill bucket tool', then I dragged my tool across the screen, it works just as well if you want to use the paintbrush tool to fill in the areas you have selected or the bucket (fill) tool. :)

Ok, but how did you lasso it? Did you just drag the tool around the area that was to be filled in?
Reply
:iconsarahscala:
SarahScala Featured By Owner Sep 9, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Yup, if you click on the lasso tool you can select sections, if you don't click 'add to section' at the top as described then it will just reselect different bits instead of keeping the last selected bit.
I'm doing a video tutorial as well so hopefully that will help.
